A rental lorry has been involved in a shocking crash that left six people injured, with two in a critical condition.

Several pedestrians are understood to have been involved in the the incident which happened at about 12.45pm on Harrison and Kneeland Street in the Chinatown neighbourhood of the city of Boston, USA.

Boston Emergency Medical Services (EMS) said four people were taken to the hospital, including two in critical condition, and two others were treated at the scene.

Police did not provide the driver's name or the circumstances that led to the incident. Images from the scene showed the truck on its side surrounded by police officers and firefighters.

“This is a very active scene and does not have a total number of victims yet,” police said in a statement.

Images from the scene shared by the emergency services show the medium-sized lorry on its side outside what appears to be a Chinese restaurant. The front end of the cab is heavily damaged, with the windscreen smashed, and the roof of the vehicle is crumpled.

A view inside the rear of the lorry shows almost no cargo inside, except for a wooden pallet and what looks like a pallet truck strapped to the side of the compartment.

On the truck it says it is from the rental firm, Penske. Company spokesman Randolph Ryerson said it was “aware of the incident” and was monitoring it closely.

He said: “Penske will be cooperating fully with authorities to support their investigation. Our thoughts are with those who have been injured in this unfortunate incident.
